It has been more than two months since I finished a painting, so I am starting the new year with hope for another exciting year of art. The "first" one of the new year is "Rising Tide," a painting full of symbolism and multiple meanings. Depending on your outlook, this could be low tide…water has run out to sea…and our little boat has been left high and dry. I went through some of those times last year and I am blaming them for not painting the last two months of the year.
On the other hand, I had a very successful year of painting with a one-man show, a successful gallery season and commissions, and new ideas to top my 2013 output. For me, the tide is rising. I see the beginnings of that in the middle-left of the painting as the ocean returns to shore…the boat is named Hope II…or, hope to…and that is how I "hope to" start each day of this year…with hope for improvement in my work and for others in our lives.
This painting will be part of an auction for ALS, a terrible disease that took our dear friend Meredith Smith last year. And that is the final note to this painting. Another friend has ALS and she and her loving husband are captured in the graffiti on the sea wall and the home port of the boat.
Sometimes it is good to be the last.
Cheers to 2014!
