This is Lois Vance…she lives in western North Carolina and has more day lilies and more Christmas trees than you can count! She is pretty proud that she is in her early 80's, so I don't think she will mind me sharing that with you. I didn't ask her about the painting, but she knows that I have taken photos of her over the last three years and that some day I planned to paint her. Last year, I painted a series of "Mountain Folk" who all had connections to the Highland Games. I also began a series of paintings of flowers from "Doc Magruder's Garden." Well, Lois joins others in this series, "Mountain Folk," along with Doc Magruder himself and a potato gardener friend of mine named Barbara. She introduced me to her rusty, antique hoe that she uses to harvest the white and red potatoes she grows in her garden. Doc and Barbara will see their portraits for the first time this weekend at the Grandfather Art Loft dinner. Lots of painters, sculptors, photographers and other artsy people will be displaying their mighty fine art work there and having a great social evening without the smell of turpentine…however, knowing some of these artists, there will certainly be some other distilled spirits in the jar…enjoy!
